General Questions

Visit capitalone.com/activate, sign in (or enroll if you’re new), select your card, verify your identity, and click Activate. Full instructions are in the How to Activate guide.
Yes. Your card arrives inactive as a security measure. It cannot be used for any purchases or ATM withdrawals until you activate it.
Online activation at capitalone.com/activate typically takes 3–5 minutes. Your card is active immediately after you complete the process.
Yes. Call the activation number printed on the sticker on the front of your new card, or on the card carrier envelope. Follow the automated prompts.
Yes. Download the Capital One mobile app on iOS or Android, sign in to your account, and look for the card activation prompt on your dashboard. Tap Activate Card and follow the on-screen steps. It’s just as fast as activating online.
Yes. The activation portal uses HTTPS encryption to protect your information. Make sure you’re on the official Capital One website (look for the padlock icon in your browser and the URL starting with https://capitalone.com).

Account Questions

Yes, you need to sign in or enroll during activation. If you don’t have an online account, you can create one during the activation process by clicking Enroll & activate.
Click Forgot username or password? on the sign-in page, or go directly to Capital One’s sign-in help page.
No. Card activation requires verification with the primary cardholder’s personal information (SSN, date of birth). Each cardholder must activate their own card.
Yes. Each new card must be activated separately, even if it’s a replacement card or an additional card on the same account.
Do not activate the card. Contact Capital One immediately by calling the fraud reporting line at 1-800-227-4825 (available 24/7) to report the situation. It’s possible the card was sent in error or your identity may have been used without your permission. Capital One’s fraud team will investigate and advise you on next steps. After Activation Questions

Your card is active immediately after completing the activation process. You can start making purchases right away.
Activating a replacement card works the same way as activating a new card. Visit capitalone.com/activate, sign in, and select the replacement card from your account. Verify your information and click Activate. Your old card will be automatically deactivated once the replacement is active. For full details, see the How to Activate guide.
Yes. After activation, you can add your card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay from your phone’s wallet app.
Wait 15 to 30 minutes after activation and try again. If it’s still declined, check that your billing address is correct in your account, verify you’re using the right PIN for debit cards, or call the number on the back of your card.
Your old card is automatically deactivated when you activate a replacement card. Cut up and dispose of the old card securely.
